Enoxaparin was continued for 30 days postoperatively. The following 11 patients (Group B) had the same VTE prophylaxis, together with warfarin, started prior to hospital
discharge and continued for 6 months postoperatively. All patients had a computed tomography pulmonary angiogram within 8 weeks after surgery and a full examination at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Both groups were FK506 comparable for characteristics. Three patients in Group A suffered a PE at 4, 6 and 16 weeks postoperatively. One PE was fatal. No patient in Group B suffered VTE (P = 0.05, chi(2) test) or haemorrhagic complications. Warfarin anticoagulation following EPP is feasible and safe, and is associated with a significant reduction in VTE complications.”
“Fibroids are the most common smooth muscle overgrowth in women. This study determined the expression and the effect of hypoxia on two potent antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) on human fibroid cells.
Immortalized human leiomyoma (fibroid) and myometrial cells were subjected to hypoxia (2 % O-2, 24 h). Total RNA and cell HDAC inhibitors in clinical trials homogenate were obtained from control and treated cells; CAT and SOD mRNA and activity levels were determined by real-time RT-PCR and
ELISA, respectively.
Fibroid cells have significantly lower antioxidant enzymes, SOD and CAT mRNA and activity levels than normal myometrial cells (p < 0.05). Hypoxia treatment significantly increased SOD activity in myometrial cells while significantly decreasing CAT activity
in fibroid cells (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in CAT mRNA levels or activity in response to hypoxia in myometrial cells. Also, there was no significant difference in SOD mRNA levels in response to hypoxia in myometrial cells.
This is the first report to show that uterine fibroids are characterized by an impaired antioxidant cellular enzymatic system. More importantly, our results S3I-201 order indicate a role for hypoxia in the modulation of the balance of those enzymes in fibroid and myometrial cells. Collectively, these results shed light on the pathophysiology of fibroids thereby providing potential targets for novel fibroid treatment.”
“OBJECTIVES: We ranked the haemodynamics and pulmonary artery (PA) configurations of Norwood with bidirectional Glenn shunt (NW-G) patients among the other staged Fontan completion (conventional) patients in this study.
METHODS: Between August 2001 and April 2010, 91 consecutive patients completed staged Fontan operations. Among them, NW-G was performed in 11.
RESULTS: There was no operative or late death except in one case which resulted from a reoperation after Fontan completion. Although the age at bidirectional Glenn (BDG) and Fontan completion was younger in NW-G (4.2 vs. 10.9 months, P < 0.01, and 2.3 vs. 3.3 years, P < 0.01), the interval between BDG and Fontan completion was not significantly different in these groups (23.6 vs. 28.0 months, P = 0.71).
