The matricellular protein periostin, a secreted adhesion molecule, is primarily secreted within the periodontal ligament and periosteum. The maturation and integrity of periodontal tissue depend on periostin. This meta-analysis compared periostin concentrations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) obtained from individuals affected by periodontal disease and from subjects with healthy periodontal tissues.
The meta-analysis conducted a search across three international databases, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, ultimately retrieving 207 studies. Researching related studies on Google Scholar, two relevant studies were discovered. Using a case-control-specific version of the Newcastle-Ottawa assessment scale, the risk of bias was evaluated in the included studies. In a partnership with an Ontario public health unit, a performance assessment tool was devised to evaluate the outcomes of staff completing an online Indigenous cultural safety education course.
An accountability checklist for annual performance reviews will measure employee understanding and application of cultural safety training.
The checklist for professional development accountability was co-created and developed by us. Following the analysis, five areas of interest stood out: terminology, knowledge, awareness, skills, and behaviors. In accordance with the goals of our community collaborators as detailed in our partnership agreement, the checklist features 37 linked indicators.
As part of their regularly scheduled staff performance evaluations, public health managers were provided with the Indigenous Cultural Safety Evaluation Checklist (ICSEC). The ICSEC's design, checklist items, and usability received feedback from public health managers. The pilot checklist implementation is currently in its introductory phase, and no data has been collected on its effectiveness.
Accountability tools play a crucial role in both sustaining the long-term positive effects of cultural safety education and in prioritizing the well-being of Indigenous communities. Improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities and cultivating an anti-racist work culture hinges on health professionals utilizing our experience to create and measure the efficacy of Indigenous cultural safety education.

The study sought to evaluate the impact on asthma exacerbations and healthcare visits resulting from using an interactive web-based asthma treatment platform.
This real-world study involved a retrospective analysis of data from adult patients who used a web-based, interactive asthma management platform, from December 2018 through May 2021. Patients who activated their accounts were characterized as active users; patients who failed to activate their accounts were classified as inactive users, constituting the control group. We assessed exacerbations, totaling oral corticosteroid (OCS) and antimicrobial courses, ER visits, hospitalizations, and asthma-related healthcare visits, pre- and post-platform registration, one year later. Statistical procedures employed encompassed t-tests, Pearson's chi-squared tests, and Poisson regression models.
From the 147 patients registered on the platform, a count of 106 accounts were activated, contrasting with the 41 that remained unactivated. Active platform users exhibited a statistically significant reduction in both total exacerbation events (256 per person-year; relative decline 0.78; 95% confidence interval 0.6-1.0) and asthma-related healthcare visits (238 per person-year; relative decline 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.74-0.96) compared to the period before platform registration; in contrast, inactive users showed no significant decline in either metric.
