A tertiary center conducted a retrospective case-control study on the Facebook use habits of DS pediatric patients, covering the period from 2004 until 2021. DS patients were carefully matched with controls (13) based on the commonalities of age, gender, and ethnicity. The data collected detailed demographics, comorbidities, indications, findings, and the complications that arose.
Fifty DS patients, with a median age of 136 years and 56% male, and 150 controls, with a median age of 127 years and 56% male, were included in the study. DS patients experienced a more frequent necessity for obstructive sleep apnea and oxygen dependence evaluations, showing a considerable difference compared to the control group (38% vs. 8%, 22% vs. 4%, p<0.001, respectively). A statistically significant difference (p=0.001) was observed in the frequency of standard bronchoscopy between the DS group (8%) and the control group (28%). Tracheal bronchus and soft palate incompetence were more prevalent in DS cases, occurring at a rate of 12% versus 33% and 8% versus 7%, respectively (p=0.0024 and p=0.002). In this research, the effect of supplementing insulin therapy with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and/or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) on weight and blood sugar levels in individuals with type 1 diabetes was examined.
Reviewing electronic health records retrospectively, 296 patients with type 1 diabetes were assessed for a 12-month period subsequent to their initial medication prescriptions. Participants were divided into four groups: control (n=80), SGLT2i (n=94), GLP1-RA (n=82), and a group receiving a combination of therapies (Combo, n=40). A one-year follow-up evaluated weight and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) shifts.
The control group's weight and glycemic control remained stable. A 12-month treatment period produced a mean weight loss of 44% (60%) in the SGLT2i group, 82% (85%) in the GLP1-RA group, and 90% (84%) in the Combo group, which was statistically significant (p<0.0001).
