after hindbrain decompression for Chiari I-associated syringomyelia.

METHODS: Forty-nine consecutive pediatric patients undergoing posterior fossa decompression for Chiari I-associated syringomyelia were followed with serial magnetic resonance imaging evaluations postoperatively. Clinical, AS1842856 radiological, and operative variables were assessed as predictors of syrinx improvement as a function of time using Kaplan-Meier plots and log-rank analysis.

RESULTS: Mean patient age was 11 +/- 5 years. Syringomyelia was symptomatic in 39 (80%) and asymptomatic in 10 (20%) cases. Twenty-one (54%) patients experienced symptom resolution (median, 4 mo postoperatively). Twenty-seven

(55%) patients experienced radiographic improvement in syringomyelia (median, 14 mo postoperatively). After hindbrain decompression, motor symptoms were associated with a 2.35 increased hazard ratio for symptom improvement (P = 0.031) versus all other symptoms. Among patients with sensory deficits, dysesthesia was associated with a 3.12 increased hazard ratio for symptom improvement (P = 0.032) versus symptoms of paresthesia or anesthesia.

Median patient age was 47.8 years, mean stricture length was 14 cm and median followup was 59 months. The stricture was approached through a perineal incision, limiting dissection to only 1 side of the urethra. The penis was invaginated to provide access to the entire length of anterior urethra in 1 stage. Two oral mucosal grafts were placed dorsally.

Results: The outcome was considered a success if the patient required no further instrumentation, including dilation or urethrotomy. The overall success rate was 83.7% with a success rate of 86.5% for primary urethroplasty and 61.5% in patients in whom urethroplasty had previously failed. Most recurrent strictures developed at the proximal end of the graft.

Conclusions: Repair of panurethral stricture in 1 stage with 1-side dissection and dorsal onlay of oral mucosa graft is a minimally

Materials and Methods: A total of 120 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia scheduled for high power 980 nm diode laser ablation of the prostate were randomized to receive treatment with the standard side firing fiber or the novel quartz head contact fiber between April 2009 and April 2010. Patients were followed for at least 6 months, although 7 were lost to followup.

Results: The side firing fiber and quartz head contact fiber groups demonstrated significant improvement in International Prostate Symptom Score (from 20 to 8.39 vs 21.63 to 9.91), International Prostate Symptom Score-quality of life

(from 4.47 to 1.94 vs 4.57 to 1.98) and maximum flow R406 mouse rate (from 7.79 to 22.22 vs 8.93 to 29.63 ml per second), and decreased prostate volume (47.79% vs 55.54%) and prostate specific antigen (59.69% to 60.61%), respectively. Complications, postoperative passage of tissue remnants and irritative symptoms were significantly less in the quartz head contact fiber group, as was the number of fibers per case.

A sample of 226 adult female vervet monkeys (age 3-18) living in multigenerational, matrilineal social groups at the Vervet Research Colony were sampled in a stable low stress baseline environment and 6 months after the

entire colony was moved to a new facility with more frequent handling and group disturbances (higher stress environment).
